Ecology of walls: Ethnography of Belgrade murals
Miličičová, Jolana ; Klepal, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (referee)
Nowadays, many of Belgrade's walls form an imaginary gallery of large-scale street paintings: murals. This thesis builds on an argument that in order to understand this phenomenon, it is important to go beyond its visual and aesthetic qualities. Instead it approaches murals as complex entities that shape and reflect life and events in a given urban space and Serbian society undergoing post-war, post-socialist and neoliberal transformations. With a help of a metaphor "ecology of walls", this thesis aims to show that murals can also be seen as a kind of "organisms" which have their own socio-material life and agency, and are closely intertwined with the "ecosystem" of the capital city and Serbian society as a whole. This "ecological" perspective allows to think about the issue holistically. That is, as an intersection of actions and events involving walls and facades, creators and passers-by, local moods and global politics. Keywords: Murals, street art, ecology, materiality, urban space, Serbia

It briefly describes the substance and the history of the graffiti phenomenon with the focus on current situation and local scene. Then, it points out less frequent questions and problems that are based on the substance of graffiti itself. The text tries to give important information and impulses to the teachers of art lessons, who often have misinterpreted and partly idealized idea of graffiti. The thesis also focuses on the state of current Prague street art that is on the decline at the moment. The text combines particular examples with consideration passages that deal with general topics like non/conformity, freedom, safety, creativity, ilussions, relationship to surroundings or private property. The research that was done among the teachers at lower and higher secondary schools is compared with the author's opinions, even by means of two dialogues with graffiti artists themselves. In the didactic part, the author summarizes possible conceptions of art lessons in connection with the graffiti topic that are supplemented with the...
Advertisements against advertising. Subvertising in the Czech Republic and abroad
Dolečková, Veronika ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (advisor) ; Vranka, Marek (referee)
The Bachelor's thesis "Advertisements against Advertising. Subvertising in the Czech Republic and Abroad." deals with the phenomenon of subvertising, which originated from the needs of artists to react to the content and number of advertising messages surrounding us on a daily basis. The thesis sets the phenomenon into cultural-historical context and describes the development of art criticism. It also includes new marketing movements that stem from subvertising. Principally, the thesis focuses on the relationship of art and marketing, whose margins are currently being exceeded. Based on the theoretical findings, the practical part of the thesis analyses selected artists and introduces important manifestations of subvertising. For the description of the artistic interventions, it uses the method of a case study and comparative analysis. At its beginning, the thesis presents four world groups which unify artists and which brought forth subvertising. The next part deals with the context of foreign artistic production and introduces six subvertisers, including several lesser-known figures. The second half of the thesis contains case studies analysing the artistic production in the Czech Republic, and comparative analyses which compare the Czech production with the attacks of foreign artists. The...
Tracks in contemporary art
Houšková, Aneta ; Daniel, Ladislav (advisor) ; Bláha, Jaroslav (referee)
The diploma thesis as a whole deals with the topic of tracks in contemporary art. It is divided into three parts. Theoretical, didactic and practical part. In the theoretical part, I first define what a track means to me and I apply this definition when searching for tracks in the works of contemporary artists. The theoretical part of the work includes an interview with Patrik Proška, an artist creating some of his works in public space. In the didactic art project, created for high school students, the topic of tracks is viewed somewhat more freely. The main goal of the thematic unit is to lead students to think about tracks through their own artistic activity. Based on the experience gained, they should be able to think about the transience of the tracks, the meaning of our legacy and the consequences of our existence. I especially focus on the art area related to land arts and street art or graffiti. The practical part is the result of my reasoning about the tracks left in public space. I established my reasoning on the knowledge gained in the theoretical part. The result is a set of author's books that document my thoughts on the tracks found or created. I focused my attention mainly on the human desire to leave their tracks in the public space. KEY WORDS track, public space, art, land art,...
Visual Reinterpretation of National Identity in the Public Space of Mexico
Haakenstad Koháková, Magdalena ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Opatrný, Josef (referee) ; Mácha, Přemysl (referee)
Visual Reinterpretation of National Identity in the Public Space of Mexico Visual communication in public spaces of Mexico has been significantly shaping collective identity, from pre-Columbian times to nowadays. This PhD thesis analyzes the visual aspect of cultural and religious identity in pre-Columbian and colonial eras, later, the discussion is led through the development of the modern day national identity that followed while concurrently explaining how former structural characteristics were partially maintained. Those phenomena are explored from two vantage points: that of the cultural and political elites and that of the general population. However, these perspectives aren't presented in a sharp opposition, rather, as two conjugating cultural streams that have been continuously negotiating and shaping cultural and national identity in correlation with historical and cultural events, including influence from significant others. Accordingly, the thesis explores the official version of national identity, that is promoted by state power, but also how official identity is received into intimate spaces, the everydayness of the bearers of such identity, its reinterpretation and alternatively, the rejections. Since public art (mural art, popular graphics, graffiti, stencil art and other diverse means of...
